“Phosphenes”Screen Print, Ink, Photo, Canvas Panel11-01-2024
“Phosphenes” is an experimental piece using pulls of screen printing ink - dropping and pulling to create negative shapes. It explores the idea of negatives, and how light creates negatives behind our eyelids. Something that fascinated me as a child, these shapes move and float when eyes are closed. Most of the time, these shapes are molten red and orange - due to the blood within the eyelid. The things we see when we close are eyes are not only impacted by the influence of light, but also by memory.
I find that my own memory is purely visual. When I imagine a moment, person, place, or object - I see it behind my eyelids. The visuals are almost never stable, and always in motion. At times, light and memories conjoin, creating a complex image. That experience is displayed physically as “Phosphenes”. ©2025 Belle Halt.
